E-Portfolio Introduction

In this e-portfolio, I have selected the best pieces that I have written in my Popular Writing class. Over the course of the semester, I have learned so much in WRTC 295. This class has introduced me to numerous genres of writing that I had been unfamiliar with. As a SMAD major with a concentration in journalism, I hope to pursue a career in fashion writing. Because of my interest in fashion, I have selected five fashion related artifacts that showcase my voice and writing style. While two of the reviews are ones that I had previously written for my class, the third one is new. Along with my three reviews, you will also find links to two fully developed fashion blogs that I have composed. I have updated both of my blogs, Fashion Aficionada and Runway Art, to showcase my most recent work. Although I initially created both blogs as assignments for my Popular Writing class, I will continue to update them in the future.

The first review within my portfolio is on Diane von Furstenberg’s Spring 2010 Ready-to-Wear collection. Within my review, I expressed my favorite and least favorite looks from the collection. In my critique of numerous pieces from the collection, I used detailed descriptions so that readers could visualize what I was discussing. Since I wrote the review with high-end boutique shoppers in mind, I could see it appearing in a publication such as The New York Times. My goal in writing the review was not to attract the budget friendly consumer, but those who would have regularly purchased garments from collections such as Diane von Furstenberg’s.

Another collection that I chose to review was Marc by Marc Jacobs' Spring 2010 Ready-to-Wear collection. Similar to my review of Furstenberg’s line, I analyzed Marc Jacobs' line in terms of which garments were or weren’t successful. The main goal of both of my fashion reviews was to capture the essence of each designer’s collection. Although this review was slightly shorter, I still could see it appearing in The New York Times.

My most recent review is on the line Zac Posen designed for Target’s Go International collection. Although Zac Posen is a high-end designer, he created a budget friendly line for Target. I wanted to review Posen’s line not only because I admire his designs, but also because it is affordable. Since my review is oriented towards college-aged females, I recently submitted it to hercampus.com.

In addition to my fashion reviews, I also created the blog Fashion Aficionada to document the latest trends. My ultimate goal in creating this blog is to express my thoughts and opinions on fashion. When choosing topics for my entries, I always have in mind what I think are the most essential pieces for a female to have in her wardrobe. Since my blog only covers women’s fashion, it is aimed towards young females who have an interest in fashion.

For my second blog, Runway Art, I chose to write about fashion and art. As an art history major, I am always fascinated when fashion designers use art as the inspiration for their lines. In my blog, I analyze current runway shows that have been influenced by either a work of art or art movement. Unlike my other fashion blog, this one is aimed towards a much broader audience. Anyone with an interest in fashion or art could be attracted to this blog.

Ultimately, I see this portfolio as only the beginning of my writing career. As I further develop as a writer, I plan on adding to the selection of artifacts currently included within this portfolio. I appreciate you taking the time to view my selection of artifacts.
