A Marc of Perfection: Marc by Marc Jacobs 2010 Spring Collection
The lights dim. Music pulsates. What emerges is quite possibly the most striking collection of the season: Marc by Marc Jacobs. Strutting down the runway, the models appear fabulously and effortlessly put together. While each of Jacobs’ designs scream “fashion of the moment,” it is also timeless and sophisticated in its own right. With every look from his Spring 2010 ready-to-wear collection, Marc Jacobs keeps you guessing. When you think that you have finally figured out Jacobs’ theme for his spring line, he delivers a look that transcends all of the others. The level of ease accompanying each piece from his collection is truly insurmountable. Pairing an elegant skirt with a pair of Converse sneakers is so unexpected and unconventional that the end result is a look of pure brilliance.
If you are not familiar with Marc Jacobs, then you should expect the unexpected with his cutting edge designs. With both a haute couture and ready-to-wear line, Jacobs knows a great deal about fashion. The one thing that I love and admire about Jacobs is his lack of fear when it comes to experimentation. Each season, Jacobs consistently comes back with new designs that are both innovative and artistic. In this season’s collection, you can find everything from a terry cloth jumpsuit to a neon colored striped dress. While some designers do not dare to bring back last season’s plaid trend, Jacobs does so without a second thought.
Jacobs uses a number of past and present trends as inspiration for his collection. One especially cute ensemble consisting of a chunky knit sweater with geometric shapes is reminiscent of fashion trends made popular in the 1980’s. Hints of leopard and tribal prints are also found on a number of dresses and separates. In addition to designing a plethora of gorgeous dresses and skirts, Jacobs also designs an array of pant silhouettes that can be paired with simple t-shirts. Based on the wide selection of pieces, Jacobs’ collection satisfies a wide range of female tastes. Everyone from the preppy, always chic female to the more punk-inspired teenager can find something from the line that fancies their taste.
Large polka dots, classic plaid, floral, leopard, and tribal inspired prints are included in Jacobs' spring line. In the midst of these wild prints, the spring collection also contains many solid tops and bottoms. For example, bright red and yellow are two colors that seem to reappear in Jacobs’ collection. A red blazer and pants along with a yellow shirt are statement pieces that create a great contrast when paired with eclectic prints. For those of you who are wary of the mismatched look, these bold solids will certainly allow you to feel more put together. Contrast is everywhere, and it works.
One of my favorites is the “blazing star” dress in a stunning shade of blue. The pattern on the dress, consisting of red and gold lilies and light blue dots, appears bold and really makes this piece stand out. Little qualities such as the dress’s silhouette and ruffles add an additional touch of femininity. If you are like me and have fallen for this print, then you are in luck since Jacobs uses the same design for his “poplin skirt.” With a large bow, high waist, and structured pleats, the “poplin skirt” is just as attention getting as the dress. When Jacobs pairs this skirt unexpectedly with a plaid blouse from his collection, the outfit captures the essence of youth and sophistication.
